Join us at Windlesham Film Club in November for I Swear, the acclaimed British comedy-drama based on the remarkable life of Tourette syndrome campaigner John Davidson.

Diagnosed with Tourette syndrome at the age of 15 in 1980s Scotland, John is growing up at a time when few people understand the condition. Faced with confusion, prejudice and isolation, he struggles not only with his uncontrollable tics but with the way other people react to him.

His life begins to change when he encounters people prepared to look beyond his condition and see John for who he really is. Friendship and acceptance offer him a way forward and, in time, his experiences inspire a new purpose: campaigning to improve understanding of Tourette syndrome.

Robert Aramayo gives a remarkable central performance as John, supported by an outstanding British cast including Shirley Henderson, Peter Mullan and Maxine Peake.

Directed by Kirk Jones (Waking Ned, Nanny McPhee), I Swear handles John's story with warmth, compassion and plenty of humour. It doesn't shy away from the prejudice and difficulties he experienced, but ultimately this is an uplifting story about friendship, resilience and the enormous difference that understanding can make.

John Davidson went on to become a prominent advocate for people with Tourette syndrome, with his campaigning and charitable work recognised with an MBE in 2019.

For those who remember the groundbreaking 1989 BBC documentary John's Not Mad, John's story may already be familiar. I Swear brings his experiences to a new generation and follows the extraordinary journey his life has taken since.
